If the site looks funky or glitchy for a little while, we're in the process of updating to the newest version of the vBulletin software. Fasten your helmets, please!

O Doug has been working his Butt of re the site, he has found a guy that specializes in V Bulletin that he knows and is familiar with.

We, Doug and I , have hired him on an occasional basis to help with and to hold Dougs hand in providing some of these needed up grades, the cost was $75.00 of which I sent this morning via PayPal from our "Cafe" account.

Well that was fast!
I think that $75 is a sound & wise investment.
Thanks for the hard work on this Doug, it is much appreciated.:guitarist:

I'd expect nothing but great things from someone named Doug. Now for the great Hoon well he lets the lovely Ms Pam do all the work and takes all the credit. Come to think of it sorta' makes you proud doesn't it. Thanks both of you for all that you do for the Cafe and a special thanks to Ms Pam for putting up with the Hoon.

Believe me, guys, all I'm doing is sitting here worrying, not much else. Our hired tech gun, Anthony, is doing the behind the scenes stuff. He came highly recommended.

O Doug, could you at some point in time, tell us what has changed.

One thing I noticed is that I look much better in the mirror....or is that the Makers Mark??????????????

Dean (and everyone else), Not much changed on the front end that users see. The important changes are in the guts of the software to hopefully improve site security against hackers (the database was vulnerable to something called "SQL injection" by outsiders) and maybe fewer software errors that I see on the admin side of things. There have been a number of patches issued bu vBulletin for various things but I lacked the knowledge to do anything with them so when an update of the software came out a week or two back I thought it was a good time to bring everything up to code. Anthony handles my brother's websites and came highly recommended so I jumped at the chance to have him do the update for us. Believe me, $75 is a reasonable fee. Had I done the upgrade myself the site would be down for months and probably closed by the government as a threat to the Internet.

Funny thing is, I seem to be the only one having a problem with the site now, I can't get the icon and images to display in Firefox but the do display properly in Chrome and IE.

I know you worry about such stuff. And I thank you for it. Why go through all that when we have the money to hire a pro?

Almost, Si. I finally had to reset my preferences in Firefox back to default and reconfigure some stuff. No big deal, I just don't know what caused it. Life goes on!

I'm thankful that NOW when I click on the icon for first unread post in Firefox 7.01 that it actually goes to the first unread post rather than to the top of the first page containing said post.

It's a small thing but I'm thankful for those.

My Ice Box requires those large blocks of Ice, my Victrola requires me to crank the handle every once and a while, not real sure about the crystal radio though, and still don't have a clue about VBulletin other than they require money occasionally......

The new auto-save feature for the message editor seems like the best thing on the user side. I know more than once I've written a message, gotten distracted, clicked where I shouldn't in the browser, and lost everything that I'd written. :eusa_wall: The video shows how your work is automatically saved and can be retrieved if need be. Very cool.

Another feature you'll find in your private message area is the ability to download your private messages from the Cafe to your own computer. Look waaaay at the bottom left of the private messages screen and you'll find:

Download all Private Messages as:
XML (http://www.motorcyclistcafe.com/forums/private.php?do=downloadpm&dowhat=xml) | CSV (http://www.motorcyclistcafe.com/forums/private.php?do=downloadpm&dowhat=csv) | Text (http://www.motorcyclistcafe.com/forums/private.php?do=downloadpm&dowhat=txt)

For most messages you can select Text and you're good except for any pictures included. If you've filled up your mailbox here but don't wish to lose the valuable words of wisdom we all write behind the scenes, now instead of having to delete them to free up space, you can download them and save them in order to pass them on to your children and grandchildren.

I had occasion to speak with AnthonyG on the phone yesterday for the first time, we'd only done business by e-mail to that point. In doing the update he told me he also tuned up the Cafe database so things would load slightly faster. This might not be noticeable to those with fast 'net connections and a modern computer but to guys like Dean who still use a 300 baud phone modem connected to a 1985 Tandy TRS80, it might help let them stay in the last century a little longer. :058:

Don, click the "From URL" tab on the "Insert Image" box.
If it still doesn't work you may have to un-check the "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" checkbox. I don't know what the difference is here, it seems to depend on the individual pic you are referencing.

Don,

No real change in how pics are posted. Probably just some cat fur jammed in your keyboard. Dave is right, make sure you un-check "reference locally"

Thanks Si!
This was at the Bear Wallow Cafe' in Alpine, AZ on a very good day.
That is an old hand-made banjo of sorts, made by a soldier or pioneer from an old, large Army canteen.
Some old boy had music in his soul and needed to get it out.
I loved it!
