You can also do an ABS reset "on the fly" by pulling the clutch at speed, turning the key off, turning it back on, waiting a couple seconds, and then restarting, either with the starter motor or letting out the clutch. When my last battery was on its death bed, doing a flying restart was the ONLY way I could get the ABS to initialize.
Has anyone ever seen this work if you had a self induced ABS fault?

Done that a number of times on the `94. Only problem is it won't totally reset until you come to a stop then take off again so it can do its trash-can lid impersonation. But it does help when your battery is on its last legs.

A quick trip to ATL BMW and $25 solved the problem. Apparently getting closer on the tolerance is better.
