Plug and play my ass! My home PC has been crashing with monotonous regularity lately and the repair bills were mounting, so I decided to replace it. At the same time, I decided to change to a laptop and go wireless [the PC and 'phone line were in the garage-cum-den, which was freezing in the winter and somewhat antisocial]. Well, what a bloody pantomime that was. The new laptop has an on-line manual and I can't get at it 'til I'm on-line and I can't get on line 'cause the wireless part doesn't work. I eventually get some sense out of the overseas helpdesk and manage to turn on the wireless bit of the laptop but can't get through to the wireless helpdesk [6 minutes of "push 1 for english, push 2 for router problems, etc, etc" and I get a message saying "all our operators are busy so ring back later"]. When I do eventually make contact, the operator talks me through changing a squillion settings on the router and, lo and behold, it works. So why the f*ck don't they send the bloody thing out with the right defaults in it in the first place? Tossers!
Then I want to go secure and punch the "security" tab and follow the instructions to stop all my neighbours using my router and, of course, it's so f*cking secure that I can't get into it either!
Finally, after a week of f*cking about, I'm wireless, secure and able to use the laptop! F*cking plug and play my ass!
While I'm on a rant, plug and play doesn't apply to poxy DVD players here either [England]. The wife wanted a small player to watch her recorded "trash" whilst she's doing her duty in the kitchen, so I got her one for £35. Got it home and there's no leads to connect it to the tele! So I go and have a rant at the retailer, who tells me no manufacurer supplies leads and I have to buy a scart at £20 [more than half as much again as the poxy player]. On top of all that, the player won't play DVD's recorded on our main DVD, 'cause that's a Panasonic which uses DVD-RAM. So now I've got to go and find a Panasonic player that's small enough to hide in the kitchen.
Why is life so bloody difficult? I'm an old man without the remaining time to be fannying about with consumer electronics!
Cheers, Steve
