View Full Version : K1200RS fuel venting problem

I'm stymied looking for a solution to a problem on my '03 K1200RS...when you open the gas cap, it releases pressure (or clears a vacuum, I can't tell which). Yesterday I tore off all the plastic from the bike, doing some routine maintenance, with a focus on figuring out which vent line was pinched off, and I didn't find a thing, they all looked good. One line, with a small yellow marker, left the fuel pump and ended up at the collection of hoses that are the overflows for fuel, battery, etc. The second line went to the under the seat charcoal cannister. Neither showed any evidence of being tampered with. (I bought the bike a couple of weeks ago, with 4,000 miles on the clock) I suppose when the bike had it's 600 mile tune up, they might have got the two hoses reversed at the fuel tank, if they had taken the fuel tank off. Does anybody know which line the one with the yellow marker is? Is it in fact the overflow, or should it be going to the cannister? Is something else causing this?
Any ideas, or do I just open the gas cap every 50 miles?

Bake,

Presuming the plumbing is similar to the R I do know of a one potential problem. If the bike was over fueled, i.e. filled to the brim, and the fuel flowed back to the charcoal canister saturating the charcoal, then venting would be compromised.

To follow on that thought, the canister can be removed. I haven't taken one off of a K bike, but on the R it is real simple. Two hoses exit from a solenoid, one goes to the throttle body and the other to the canister. Remove those hoses and cap both fittings on the solenoid and the fitting on the throttle body. One hose exits the tank and enters the canister. One hose exits the canister and drops to the bottom of the bike. Join those two hoses with a connector. Remove the cannister.

If the problem was with the cannister it will be solved. If you object to tampering with emmisions controls, ignore the above. Depending on your build date, an 03 may still be under warranty.

Bake,

Let me think about this for a while. I had the same/similar problem on my K12RS as well. I'm sorry to say that after my "mini stroke" on Thanksgiving Day, my memory is even worse than it was before.

I'll get back to you,
Frank

Stop, Hold the presses, I think I recall what it was. I believe my problem started after removing the tank. What I had done was crimp one of the lines every time I replaced the stinking tank. I fixed it by re-routing my hoses to make sure they could not crimp. Frank:)

Thanks for the tips, guys. Frank, I'm sorry to hear of your recent health issues. I myself haven't been doing as well as I might, and since the Holiday season also. A new PA has possibly sorted my meds a little better. Best of luck, Frank.

While I have an appoinment next week with the local dealer to fix this, I'm going to see if a cannister removal this weekend doesn't cure the prob. I feel with some of the tips here, and somemore Internet work, and some logical thought put into what I'm seeing when I tear into the bike again, I may be able to fix this.

What happened? Did you have a TIA?

Bake, here's a link to the ADVrider forum with an embedded link to the how-to regarding the cannisterectomy. I followed the diagram and performed my cannisterectomy easily:

"What happened? Did you have a TIA?"

Dean,
The docs are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. I have another doctor appointment with a neuro-ophthalmologist (sp?) next month. Oh well.
